That door and that path.

A Faiz Ahmed Faiz Poem:

Dekhne ko to kise taab hai, lekin ab tak,
Jab bhi us raah se guzro, to kisi dukh ki kasak
Tokti hai, ke who darwaza khula hai ab bhi
Aur us sehn mein, har su, yunhi pehle ki tarah
Farsh-e-naumeedi-e-deedar bicha hai ab bhi

( I do not want to see her but even now,
When I pass that way, a wave of pain stops me,
And shows me that open door,
And suddenly on the courtyard of my mind, just like it always has been,
The floor of my hopeless desire to see her spreads out)

Aur kahin yaad, kisi dilzada bacche ke tarah,
Haath phailate hue, baithi hai, faryad-kunan
Dil yeh kehta hai, kahin aaur chale jayen jahan,
Koi darwaza abas wa ho, na bekaar koi
Yaad, faryaad ka kashkol liye baithi ho
Mahram-e-hasrat-e-didar ho diwar koi,
Na koi saya-e-gul, hijrat-e-gul se viraan.

( And then memories like a stricken child,
Beg me with open hands and complain,
My heart implores “ Let’s go away from here”
Where these memories do not beg in front of me,
Where there is no wall yearning to see who I once loved,
Where there is no shadow yearning to meet the departed rose)

Yeh bhi dekha hai, sau baar ke jab rahon mein,
Des-pardes ki bemehr guzargahon mein,
Qafile qamat-o-rukhsar-o-lab-o-gesu ke,
Parda-e-chashm pe yuun guzre hain be soorat-o-rang,
Jis tarah band darichoon pe gire barish-e-sang
Aur dil kehta hai, har baar, chalo, laut chalo,
Is se pehle ke wahan jayen aur yeh dukh bhi na ho,
Yeh nishani ke who darwaza khula hai ab bhi,
Aur us sehn mein, har su, yunhi pehle ki tarah
Farsh-e-naumeedi-e-deedar bicha hai ab bhi.

( But This too, I have experienced a hundred times,
When in these loveless ways of our cities,
When endless views of beautiful faces, lips and locks,
Are spread in front of me: nameless, colorless.
These views to my eyes are like hail hitting shut windows.
And my heart cries out “ Go back. Go back to that path of the open door,
For these sights may make me lose that precious pain,
That pain which grips me when I see that door,
the pain that shows me the courtyard of my mind, and just like it always has been-
the floor of my hopeless desire to see her spreads out”)

chand nikle kisi jaanib teri zaebai ka
rang badle kisi soorat shab-e-tanhai ka

( I wish that I see the moon of your beauty rising from any direction
today
One glimpse would be enough to change the color of this
lonely evening)

daulat-e-lab se phir ai khusrav-e-shirin dehna
aaj larzaan ho koi harf shanaasai ka

( From the treasure of your lips, O princess with a sweet mouth
let there be words that acknowledge that you still “know” me )
