I too await those laser beams that would annihilate me

Ghalib is timeless. His words and thoughts were beautiful in the 19th century, the 20th century and they continue to be beautiful in the 21st century.
Take the following couplet:

partav-e-khur se hai shabnam ko fana ki taalim,
main bhi hoon ik inayat ki nazar hone tak.

( The brilliance of the sun tells the dew drop to vaporize and vanish,
Our relationship is similar. I am waiting for that one benevolent glance from you)

See how beautifully Ghalib compares his beloved with the sun and himself with the dewdrop. And how simply and so effectively tells her that though it will be the cause of his suffering and misery, but he still longs for a benevolent glance from her.

This sher is from a famous ghazal that was posted many years ago in MHFL. Here it is again for you to enjoy. It has been sung by many singers.

aah ko chaahiye ik umr asar hone tak,
kaun jeeta hai teri zulf ke sar hone tak.

( A sigh from the heart takes an eternity to take effect,
But life is short and I may not live long enough to see my sighs take effect – and conquer your locks)

Daam-e-har mauj mein hai halqa-e-sad kaam-e-nihang,
dekhein kya guzre hai katre pe guhar hone tak.

(Every wave has within itself a hundred hazards( crocodiles) coiled up
Lets see how the water drop overcomes these hazards and becomes a pearl)

ashqui sabr-talab aur tamanna betaab,
dil ka kya rang karoon khoon-e-jigar hone tak.

( love requires patience but desire will not wait,
So what hues should my heart reflect as it bleeds to death?)

hum ne maana ki tagaful na karoge lekin,
khaak ho jayenge hum tum ko khabar hone tak.

( I know that you will not be indifferent to my state,
But by the time you learn about my state, I would be reduced to dust)

partav-e-khur se hai shabnam ko fana ki taalim,
main bhi hoon ik inayat ki nazar hone tak.

( The brilliance of the sun tells the dew drop to vaporize and vanish,
Our relationship is similar. I am waiting for that one benevolent glance from you)

yak nazar besh nahin fursat-e-hasti gafil,
garmi-e-bazm hai ik raqs-e-sharar hone tak.

( Life is short, it lasts no longer than the twinkling of the eye,
And the pleasures of a mehfil( gathering) last no longer than the light of a spark.)

gam-e-hasti ka ‘Asad’ kis se ho juz marg ilaaj,
shamma har rang mein jalti hai sahar hone tak

( Nothing except death can cure the sorrows of life, O “Asad”,
A candle always flickers till dawn, though its colour and brightness keeps changing throughout the night)

When pain exceeds a point, there is infinite solace and relief.)
