This spring has been a strange one indeed

Today we have a beautiful Faiz Ahmed Faiz Ghazal. I had posted this a long time back in MHFL.
It has been sung beautifully by many singers. Here are my recommended renditions:

Noor Jahan:

Asad Amanat Ali Khan:

Habib Wali Mohammed:

Faiz reciting it himself:

Farida Khanum:

Mehdi Hassan:

Tum aaye ho na shab-e-intezaar guzri hai,
Talaash mein hai sehar, baar baar guzri hai.

( Neither have you come, nor does the evening of separation show any sign of ending
Even the morning breeze has blown again and again, looking for you)

Junoon mein jitni bhi guzri bakaar guzri hai,
Agarche dil pe kharaabi hazaar guzri hai.

( The time that I have spent in madness, it has all been well spent,
Even though my heart suffered a thousand painful moments)

Hui hai hazrat-e-naseh se guftagoo jis shab,
Who shab zaroor sar-e-ku-e-yaar guzri hai.

( Those days when my advisor advised me to not meet my beloved,
I have deliberately spent those evenings in the lane of my beloved)

Woh baat saare fasaane mein jis ka zikr na tha,
Woh baat unko bahut na-gawaar guzri hai.

( That one small incident that does not even find mention in our story,
For some reason that is the one that caused her to be so angry)

Na gul khile hain, na unse mile, na main pi hai,
Ajeeb rang mein abke bahaar guzri hai.

( The flowers have not blossomed, I have not met her, and I have not tasted wine,
The season of spring this year has indeed been very strange)

Chaman mein gharat-e-gulchin se jaane kya guzri,
Qafas se aaj saba be-qaraar guzri hai.

( I worry about the fate of the garden. What destruction has the flower pucker caused?
The breeze that blew past my prison has been so restless today.)

na aaj lutf kar itna ke kal guzar na sake,
woh raat jo tere gaisuoon ki raat nahin.
yeh arzoo bhi bari cheez hai, magar humdum,
wisal-e-yaar faqt arzoo ki baat nahin.

( Don’t give me so much joy today, that I may
find it difficult to spend the night tomorrow
– tomorrow’s night may not be sheltered by your
long hair.
I know that desire is a great thing, my friend
But I also know that meeting one’s beloved
is not just a matter of desire)
