My only concern/business is with those eyes.

About 2 weeks back I had posted a sher from this Jigar Moradabadi ghazal. Here is the complete ghazal.
You can listen to two renditions of this ghazal here:

Ustad Iftekhar Ahmed Nizami: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4JXm-aP_dY
Ghulam Ahmed Khan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLQj8ygYVvU
Na to mainkade ki hai justaju, na talaash-e-bada-o-jaam hai,
Jo nafaz nafaz ko pila gayi mujhe us nigah se kaam hai

( I do not search for the tavern, I also have no desire to find wine and the wineglass,
My aim is to find those eyes whose one glance could make my every moment/breath intoxicated forever)

Hai durust teri nasihatein, hai baja ke main bhi haraam hai,
Abhi tham zara mere nasehah, abhi mere haath mein jaam hai

( Your advice is great, and I agree, O advisor, that drinking wine is not a good habit,
But can you please pause your advice for a few minutes because I still have a cup of wine in my hand)
Woh haram ho ya koi butkada, tera aastan ho ke naqsh-e-pa,
Jahan khud se jhuk na sake jabin wahan sajda karna haraam hai!

( It may be a place of worship, or a tavern, or the doorstep of your house, or the print of your feet,
if the head does not automatically bow down, then any prayer/adulation at that place is improper!)

jise kainaat nein sun liya woh sadaa nahin hai koi sadaa,
jo tarap ke dil mein hi reh gaya wohi dard-e-dil ka payaam hai

( If the whole world hears it, then that cry of pain has no value.
But if a cry of the heart suffers silently and makes no noise then that becomes truly noble/worthy)

koi mast hai, koi tashnalab, to kisi ke haath mein jaam hai
magar isko koi karega kya? yeh to mainkade ka nizaam hai!

( some people are intoxicated, some have a glass of wine in their hands but some remain thirsty,
This difference may seem unfair to some but not everyone who goes to a wineshop gets the same treatment. And that’s the way it is)

Kabhi roshni, kabhi teeragi: yehi roz-o-shab ka nizaam hai,
Yehi zindagi hai to zindagi tujhe door hi se salaam hai

( Sometimes there is light, and sometimes there is darkness: this is the cycle of day and night,
And if life is nothing except this dull and boring cycle, then O life I prefer to salute you from a distance)

Yeh janab-e-sheikh ka falsafa hai ajeeb saare jahaan se,
Joh wahaan peyo to halal hai, jo yahaan peeyo to haraam hai

( The philosophy of the preacher is strange indeed and so difficult to understand,
He says that drinking in paradise would be okay but drinking on earth is improper!)

Rind jo mujhko samajhte hain unhein hosh nahin
Mainkada saaz hoon main mainkada bardosh nahin

( those people who consider me a drunkard, they are not in their senses,

I am an admirer of the tavern but not dependent on it/mad about it)

Mera jo haal ho so ho, barq-e-nazar giraye ja,
Main yuun hi naala kash rahoon, tu yuun hi muskuraaye ja

Let me remain the one who complains, don’t listen to me – just keep on smiling)

She looked and my complaints vanished instantly.

Today we have a Jigar Moradabadi Ghazal sung by Begum Akhtar:

is ishq ke hathon se hargiz na-mafar dekha,
utni hi badhi hasrat jitna hi udhar dekha.

( The path of love did not offer me any respite or refuge,
My desire continued to grow as I kept looking at her)

tha khel sa pehle ishq, lekin jo khuli aankhein,
dooba hua rag rag mein woh teer-e-nazar dekha.

( At first I thought of love as a game, an amusement, but then one day I realized
That in every vein of my body the arrows of her eyes had penetrated deep)

woh ashq bhari ankhein, yeh dard bhare naale,
allah na dikhlaye jo waqt-e-sehar dekha.

( My eyes were full of tears, my voice was full of pain,
I wish no one ever has to face the kind of situation that I faced in love)

jaate rahe dam bhar mein sare hi gile shikwe,
us jaan-e-tagaful nein jab aik nazar dekha.

( In one moment all my complaints vanished,
And that happened because that uncaring beloved looked at me once)

tha bais-e-ruswai har chand junoon mera,
unko bhi na chain aaya jab tak na idhar dekha.

( my madness for her was the cause of our disgrace,
And to add to that, she could not stop herself from looking at me in front of everyone)

yuun dil ke tadapane ka kuch to hai sabab aakhir,
yaan dard nein karvat li, yaan tumnein idhar dekha.

( The misery of my heart must have a reason:
Either the pain of love has reemerged or you looked at me once)

mathe pe pasina kyon? ankhon men nami si kyon?
kuch khair to hai, tumnein kya haal-e-Jigar dekha?

( You have sweat on your forehead, your eyes are moist,
What happened? Have you just met Jigar and seen his condition?)

Just smile and walk by without even looking

Today we have a Jigar Moradabadi ghazal.

Sung beautifully by Habib Wali Mohammed

Sung by Gulshan Ara Syed:

niyaz-o-naaz ke jhagde mitaye jaate hain,
hum un mein aur woh hum mein samaaye jaate hain

( The constant battles between her pride and my requests are now over,
For she is now becoming a part of me, and I a part of her)

yeh naaz-e-husn to dekho ki dil ko tadpa-ke
nazar milate nahin, muskuraye jaate hain

( witness the pride of beauty: after subjecting my heart to immense and unbearable desire,
She does not even look at me, she just walks by with a smile on her face)

Rawan-rawan liye jaati hai aarzoo-e-wisaal
Kashan-kashan tere nazdeek aaye jaate hain

( my desire to meet you keeps me in constant motion,
And slowly-slowly I keep moving in your direction)

mere junoon-e-tamanna ka kuch khayal nahin
lajaye jate hain, daaman churaye jaate hain

( She does not care about what happens to the madness of my desires,
She just keeps being shy and drawing away from me)

jo dil se uthte hain shole woh aag ban ban kar
tamam manzar-e-fitarat pe chhaye jaate hain

( the sparks that fly from my heart, become blazing fires,
And are spreading all over the visible surroundings)

main apni aah ke sadke ki meri aah mein bhi
teri nigah ke andaz paye jaate hain

( I bless my sighs of grief/pain because even in these sighs,
I can feel the manner in which you looked at me)

ilahi tark-e-mohabbat bhi kya mohabbat hai
bhulaate hain unhein, woh yaad aaye jaate hain

( God, what kind of love is this ending of love?
I keep trying to forget her but the memories of her keep haunting me)

== === === === == =================
Aitbaar barta hai aaur bhi mohabbat ka,
Jab woh ajnabi bankar paas se guzarte hain

( My faith in our love becomes even stronger,
When she acts like a stranger and walks by without even looking.)

Tracking the progress of love

Today we have a Jigar Moradabadi Ghazal. It has been sung beautifully by Rochana:

I tried to find more shers of this ghazal but I could not.

Sharma gaye, lacha gaye, daman chura gaye,
Ai ishq marhaba, woh yahan tak to aa gaye.

( she became bashful, she smiled and then withdrew from me,
O Love, well done! At least she has come this far.)

Dil par hazaar tarah ke auham chaa gaye,
Yeh tumnein kya kiya, meri duniya mein aa gaye.

( a thousand different fears, worries and superstitions descended upon my heart,
Why did you have to come into my life? All these fears and worries are because of you)

Sehn-e-chaman ko apni baharon pe naaz tha,
Woh aa gaye to saari baharon pe chaa gaye.

( The garden was so proud of the season of spring and blossom,
But when she came, she overwhelmed the season, blossom and the entire garden)

Ab kya karoon main fitrat-e-nakaam ishq ko,
Jitnein thay hadsaat mujhe raas aa gaye

( What should I do about my nature that constantly searches for disillusionment in love,
You see, I enjoy the painful accidents of love.)

=== ====== ====== ======== === ======== =====
Tagaful, tajahul, tabassum, takallum,
Yahan tak to pahunche hain who aate aate.

( she shows that she does not care, she ignores me, sometimes she smiles and at times she talks to me,
I am so happy that though slowly, at least she has come this far.)
=== ====== ====== ======== === ======== =====

==== === ======= ====== = = =================
Lehza-ba-lehza, dam-ba-dam, jalwa-ba-jalwa aaye ja,
Tishna-e-husn-e-zaat hoon, tishnalabi barhaye ja

( moment by moment, step by step, glimpse by glimpse keep coming closer( but don’t ever reach me)
I am thirsty for beauty, please keep increasing my thirst like this)

Some accidents are difficult to forget

Today we have a Jigar Moradabadi ghazal. It has been posted earlier in MHFL( several years back). But I recently found an extremely rare video of Jigar Moradabadi reciting this ghazal on Youtube. So I am posting it again.

Jigar reciting it:

This ghazal sung by Begum Akhtar:

duniya ke sitam yaad na apni hi wafaa yaad
ab mujh ko nahin kuch bhi mohabbat ke siwa yaad

( I do not remember the world’s cruelty, and I do not remember my faithfulness
Today I do not remember anything except those days of love)

cherra tha jise pehle pehal teri nazar nein
ab tak hai woh ik nagma-e-be-saaz-o-sada yaad

( the song that you awakened in my soul by looking at me once,
That wordless, soundless song still reverbates in my soul)

main shikwa-ba-lab tha mujhe yeh bhi na raha yaad
shaayad ke mere bhoolnewale ne kiya yaad

( I was full of complaints that I did not even remember
that she who had forgotten me may have remembered me for a moment)

jab koi haseen hota hai sargarm-e-nawazish
us waqt woh kuch aaur bhi aate hain siwa yaad

( When some beauty bestows her kind loving grace on me,
At that moment I miss her even more and remember those days of love)

kya jaaniye kya ho gaya arbab-e-junoon ko,
marne ki ada yaad na jeene ki ada yaad

( I do not know what has happened to the people who were supposed to be mad in love,
They do not seem to remember how to die properly and they have forgotten how to live)

muddat hui ik haadsa-e-ishq ko lekin
ab tak hai tere dil ke dharaknein ki sada yaad

( That accident of love occurred a long long time back,
but I still clearly remember the sound of your heartbeat)

haan haan tujhe kya kaam mere shiddat-e-gham se
haan haan nahin mujh ko tere daaman ki hawa yaad

( Oh yes. I agree, you have nothing to do with my unending/immense sadness
and oh yes, I do not rememer the breeze from the movement of your clothes)

main tark-e-rah-o-rasm-e-junoon kar hi chuka tha
kyoon aa gayi aise mein teri lagzish-e-pa yaad

( I had decided to end all contact with you and finish my love for you
but then suddenly your beautiful walk flashed before my eyes)

kya lutf ki main apna pata aap bataoon
keeje koi bhooli hui khaas apni ada yaad

( what is the fun if I remind you about myself,
why dont you try to recapitulate something special about me)

=== ===== ======== =============== =======================
Jigar who bhi za sar ta paa mohabbat hi mohabbat hain,
Magar unki mohabbat saaf pehchaani nahin jaati

( Jigar, she is full of love – from head to toe. She breathes love. Love is her.
Her actions do not seem like love but that is because her love is difficult to understand. It is different. Alag hai :-))

synchronization in love is a major issue

Today we have a beautiful Jigar Moradabadi ghazal.

I had posted this ghazal over 10 years ago in MHFL. I am posting it again because I have found a few new shers of this ghazal and I wanted to share some youtube links with you.

It has been sung by Abida Parveen:

Sudha Malhotra:

Ameer Rafiq Murkeyan Wale in a Qawwalli form:

Kuch is ada se aaj woh pehloo-nasheen rahe
jab tak hamare paas rahe, hum nahin rahe

( Today the effect of her being with me was such
that while she was there, I ceased to exist)

ya rab kisi ke raaz-e-mohabbat ki khair ho
dast-e-janoon rahe na rahe aasteen rahe

( God! Please protect the secrets of lovers
in this way: even if the hand of passion
is not there, the sleeve that covers the
hand should always be there)

ja aaur koi zabt ki duniya talaash kar
Ai Ishq! Hum to ab tere kabil nahin rahe

( Go and find some other world of patience!
Love, I am no longer capable/worthy of you)

dard-e-ghane-firaq ke yeh sakht marhale
hairaan hoon ke phir bhi tum itne haseen rahe!

( The pain of staying away from me would
have given you a lot of misery and trouble.
However I am surprised that you remain as beautiful as before)

is ishq ki talaafi-e-mafaat dekhna
rone ki hasratein hain jab aansoo nahin rahe

( Look at the problem of synchronization in love:
I have a desire to cry when all my tears have finished)

imaan-e-kufr aur na duniya va deen rahe
ai ishq! shadbash, ki tanha hamein rahe

( Now, no religion remains, there is no feeling of good and bad,
Love, be happy, because of you, only I and you remain)

mujhko nahin kubul do aalam ki vusatein
qismat mein ku-e-yaar ki do gaz zameen rahe

( I have no desire for the vastness of heaven and earth,
all I want is a few yards of land in the street of my beloved( to be buried))

Allah re, chashm-e-yaar ki woh maujiz-bayanian
har ik ko hai gumaan ke mukhatib hamein rahe

( The magic with which she speaks causes,
everyone to think that he is the only one being addressed)

== === ========= ========== ========= =======

aankhon mein bas ke, dil mein sama kar chale gaye,
khwabeeda zindagi thi, jaga kar chale gaye

( she became a part of my heart and my sight, and then she left,
my life was just a dream, but she woke me up and then she left)

apne farogh-e-husn ki dikha ke vusatein
mere hadood-e-shauq barha kar chale gaye

( By displaying the vastness of her luminous beauty,
she expanded the limits/boundries of my desires, and then she left.)

I long for the desert. You long for your home

This is a beautiful Jigar Moradabadi ghazal. I had posted one sher from this ghazal last week.

It has been sung by Begum Akhtar:

woh ada-e-dilbari ho, ke nawa-e-aashiqana

jo dilon ko fateh kar le, wohi fateh-e-zamaana

( The grace of beauty or the songs of love-

Whatever can win hearts, that can win the world)

yeh tera jamaal-e-kamil, yeh shabab ka zamaana

dil-e-dushmanan salamat, dil-e-dostan nishaana

( Your beauty- so perfect and complete and this enchanting world around us,

The hearts of enemies are being spared but the hearts of friends have become targets)

kabhi husn ki tabeyat, na badal saka zamaana

wohi naaz-e-be-neyaazi, wohi shaan-e-khusruwana

( This world has never been able to change the characteristics of  beautiful people-

That carefree arrogance and that pride of royalty)

teri doori-o-huzoori se hai kuch ajeeb aalam

abhi zindagi haqeeqat, abhi zindagi fasaana

( There is a strange effect created by the fact that you are close and yet so far away-

Sometimes life looks like reality and sometimes it appears like a dream)

mere hum-safeer bulbul, mera tera saath hi kya?

main zameer-e-dasht-o-dariya, tu aseer-e-ashiana

( O nightingale who sings with me, our companionship is short-lived-

For I have the heart that longs for oceans and deserts and you are a prisoner of your nest/house)

main woh saaf hi na keh doon jo hai farq mujh mein tujh mein

tera dard, dard-e-tanha, mera gham, gham-e-zamaana

( Let me state clearly the difference between you and me:

Your pain is yours alone, but my pain is the sorrow of the whole world)

tere ishq ki karamat yeh agar nahin to kya hai?

kabhi be-adab na guzra mere paas se zamaana

( If this is not the miracle of your love then what is it?-

That since you came to my life, the world has never crossed my path without bowing to me with respect)

main hoon us maqam par ab ke firaq-o-wasl kaise?

mera ishq bhi kahani, tera husn bhi fasaana

( I am at that stage of love that separation and meeting seem the same to me-

For my love is just fiction and your beauty  just an illusion)

meri zindagi to guzri tere hijr ke sahaare-

meri maut ko bhi pyare koi chaahiye bahaana!

( My life has has had just one meaning- your longing

But don’t you think that my death also needs a reason!

[ The above sher says that the poet’s life is due to his beloved’s longing. Now the poet needs something to help his death. Since death is the opposite of life so he is suggesting something opposite to longing to make it possible- what? Meeting of course. That is the beauty of poetry. To be able to say so much without actually saying it] )

tere dil ke tootne par hai kisi ko naaz kya kya

tujhe ae “Jigar” mubarak yeh shikast-e-fatehaana

(  Do you know O Jigar, someone is extremely proud that she has broken your heart,

Congratulations to you for you have achieved a victory in loss and a loss in victory)

======== ========== ======== =============== ======

junoon ke sakht maraahil bhi teri yaad ke saath

haseen haseen nazar aaye jawaan jawaan guzre

[ In the tough times of separation and madness,  because I was surrounded by your memories,

Those times  appeared so amazingly beautiful and so amazingly young]

mera kamaal-e-sher bas itna hi hai “Jigar”

woh hum pe chaa gaye, hum zamaane pe chaa gaye J

( The magic of my poetry can be summed up in just one line O Jigar:

She has won my heart and I have won the world) J
