That night and that walk home

Today we have a nazm by Majaz Lucknawi. The name of this nazm is Awaara.
I have not posted all stanzas of this Nazm. It is much longer than this.

It has been sung beautifully by Jagjit singh:

it has also been sung by Talat Mehmood:

sheher ki raat aaur main nashaad-o-nakaara phiroon,
jagmagati jaagti sarkon pe awaara phiron,
gair ki basti hai, kab tak dar-badar maara phiroon?
ai gham-e-dil kya karoon, ai weshat-e-dil kya karoon?

( I wander about sad and hopeless in this city at night
I wander about aimlessly on the bright lit up roads
How long will I wander hopeless in this city that I cannot call my own?
What should I do, O aching heart? What should I do, O Madness of my heart?

yeh roopahli chaaon, yeh akaash par taaron ka jaal,
jaise sufi ka tasavvur, jaise aashiq ka khayaal,
aah lekin kaon samjhe, kaon jaane ji ka haal?
ai gham-e-dil kya karoon, ai weshat-e-dil kya karoon?

( Ah! the silver shadows of the night and the web of stars in the sky
it is almost like an imagination of a poet or a thought of a lover
But alas! Who will ever be able to comprehend the state of my heart?
What should I do, O aching heart? What should I do, O Madness of my heart?)

raat hans-hans kar yeh kehti hai ke maikhaane mein chal,
phir kisi shehnaaz-e-lala-rukh ke kashaane mein chal,
yeh nahin mumkin to phir ai dost veeraane mein chal!
ai gham-e-dil kya karoon, ai weshat-e-dil kya karoon!

( The night invites me with laughter to a wine-tavern,
Or to visit the bed chamber of a flower faced beauty,
And if these are not possible then go to a wasteland!
What should I do, O aching heart? What should I do, O Madness of my heart?)

ji mein aata hai, yeh murda chaand taare noch loon,
is kinaare noch loon, aur us kinaare noch loon,
aik do ka zikr kya, saare ke saare noch loon!
ai gham-e-dil kya karoon, ai weshat-e-dil kya karoon?

( In my madness I want to pull out all these dead stars with my fingers
I want to pull them from that corner and also from this corner
Not one, not two, I want to pull out every one of these stars
What should I do, O aching heart? What should I do, O Madness of my heart?)

raaste mein ruk ke dam le loon, meri aadat nahin,
laut kar waapis chala jaoon meri fitrat nahin,
aaur koi humnawaa mil jaaye, yeh kismat nahin!
ai gham-e-dil kya karoon, ai weshat-e-dil kya karoon!

( To pause and take rest on the way, that is not what I do
To go back in vain, that is not in my nature
And to find a companion on this road, that is not in my fate
What should I do, O aching heart? What should I do, O Madness of my heart?)

ji mein aata hai ke ab ahad-e-wafa bhi tod doon,
un ko pa sakta hoon main, yeh aasra bhi tod doon,
haan munasib hai yeh zanzeer-e-hawa bhi tod doon!
ai gham-e-dil kya karoon, ai weshat-e-dil kya karoon!

( I feel like breaking the promise of sincerity that I once made
I can win her love, I should break this hope as well
Yes, I should break the thread of hope that I have woven out of flimsy breeze
What should I do, O aching heart? What should I do, O Madness of my heart?)

dil mein ik shola bharak utha hai aakhir kya karoon?
mera paimana chalak utha hai, aakhir kya karoon?
zakham seene ka mehak utha hai, aakhir kya karoon?
ai gham-e-dil kya karoon, ai weshat-e-dil kya karoon?

( A flame has been kindeled in my heart, what to do
brimful is my cup, what to do
the scar of my heart has come to bloom, what to do
What should I do, O aching heart? What should I do, O Madness of my heart?)

Have enough to spill

This is a Majaz Lucknawi  poem.
A few shers of this poem were recited by Majaz himself in a gathering of poets in the movie
Pyaasa:

taskeen-e-dil mahzoon na hue, woh sai-e-karam farma bhi gaye
is sai-e-karam ko kya kahiye? bahla bhi gaye tarpa bhi gaye

(Before my heart was completely satisfied, she did a favor and went away
What can I say about this favor? It pleased as well as tortured me)

ik arz-e-wafa bhi kar na sake, kuch keh na sake, kuch sun na sake
yahaan hamne zubaan hi kholi thi, wahan aankh jhuki sharmaa bhi gaye

[I could not even start to express my love, I could not say anything, I could not hear anything
By the time I had just opened my mouth, she had already lowered her eyes out of shyness]

aashuftage-e-vahshat ki kasam, hairat ki kasam, hasrat ki kasam
ab aap kahen kucch ya na kahen, hum raaz-e-tabassum pa bhi gaye

[By the heights of my madness, my astonishment and my unfulfilled desires, I promise that
Now whether you say something or not, I know the secret of your smile]

roodad-e-gham-e-ulfat unse hum kya kahte, kyon kar kahte ?
ik harf na nikla hothon se aaur aankh main aansoo aa bhi gaye

[How could I tell her about the reason of my heartbreak and there was no need to tell her…
Before I could utter a single word, her eyes were filled with tears ]

us mehfil-e-kaif-o-masti mein us anjuman-e-irfaanii mein
sab jaam bakaf baithe hi rahe, ham pi bhi gaye chalakaa bhi gaye

[ In that gathering of the wise seeking intellectual intoxication
everyone else just sat there holding their cups, BUT only I had my heart’s fill
and also had enough to spill.

The poet is talking about intellectual discussions where everyone
else just tasted wisdom but the poet drank the wine of wisdom
to the fullest and also spilled it( gave it to others) ]

and I have walked on that star laden path a million times)
