This spring has been a strange one indeed

Today we have a beautiful Faiz Ahmed Faiz Ghazal. I had posted this a long time back in MHFL.
It has been sung beautifully by many singers. Here are my recommended renditions:

The eyes can see much more now

This is Faiz Ahmed Faiz Nazm .

In my opinion this is one of the most beautiful urdu nazms ever written.

Noor jahan has sung this nazm:

It describes the journey from romance to reality. The first paragraph describes the

past, the romance. In this paragraph the beloved in the only thing
in the world for the poet. The poet thinks that if he is able to win over his beloved
then his life will forever be filled with happiness. But this does not happen-he is
unsuccessful in love.

Then the scene shifts to the present. The poet realizes that love is
not the only thing in the world. And there are bigger problems, and
greater delights. He still finds her beauty very attractive but he cannot
give her the unbounded love that he could give her earlier.

Mujh se pehli si mohabbat mere mehboob na maang

( Do not ask me for that old fervor in love, my beloved)

maine samjha tha ke tu hai to darakshaan hai hayaat
tera gham hai to gham-e-dahar ka jhaghra kya hai
teri soorat se hai aalam mein bahaaron ko sabaat
teri aankhoon ke siwa duniya mein raakha kya hai
tu jo mil jaaye to taqdeer nighoon ho jaaye
yoon na tha, maine faqt chaaha tha yuun ho jaaye

( at that time I thought…
that if you are with me then life would become heaven
if you are the cause of my trouble, then there would be no other
trouble in life
your face makes the season of spring permanent
there is nothing in the world apart from your eyes
if you become mine, fate will smile at me forever…
but it wasn’t to be, I had hoped so much that it would be this way )

anginat sadiyon ke tariq bahimana talism
resham-o-atalas-o-kimkhaab main bunwaye hue
jabaja biktay hue koocha-o-bazar main jism
khaak main lithray hue khoon mein nehlaye hue

( Now … if I look at the history of people ..
and find that there have been very few bodies wrapped in silk and
most bodies have been sold in markets and houses
most bodies are covered in mud and bathed in blood)

laut jaati hai udhar ko bhi nazar, kya keejay ?
ab bhi dilkash hai tera husn, magar kya keejay
aaur bhi dukh hain zamaanay mein mohaabat ke siwa
raahatein aaur bhi hain wasl ki raahat ke siwa

( Now… my eyes keep going back to these scenes of history
and the reality of life, what can I do ?
your beauty is still intoxicating, but what to do?
there are other sorrows in the world apart from the sorrow in love,
there are other delights in the world apart from delight of
meeting one’s beloved)

Mujh se pehli si mohabbat mere mehboob na maang

mainkada salamat hai to hum surkhi-e-main se
tazin-e-dar-o-baam-e-haram karte rahenge
( If the wineshop is intact then with the red colour of the wine,
I will keep on painting the doors and walls of the religious places)

asbab-e-gham-e-ishq baham karte rahenge
veerani-e-dauran pe karam karte rahenge
( I will keep on collecting verious aspects related to the pain of love,
and in this way I will bestow greatness to these desolate times)
